Natural Ways to Prevent and Treat Pests

Pest control can be tricky when you’re doing it on your own. Many homeowners want to try and get rid of a small pest problem as quickly and efficiently as possible and there are many tools to do so.

However, many people are wary of using commercial pest sprays and other deterrents. These products are often loaded with chemicals and although noted as safe for indoors, can be intimidating and worrisome.

So we put together some ideas for DIY pest control using products most people have lying around the house. Give a few of them a try and your home will be pest-free* in no time!

Soap & Water

A simple staple can be used to treat a variety of pests: soap and water. Not only should you use this combination to keep areas of your home clean (which will also deter pests) but it can be used in a spray bottle to treat an ant infestation effectively. Only use a small amount of dish soap compared to water, and don’t overspray or you could end up with mold or mildew.

From the Pantry

Some pantry staples are highly effective at preventing and treating pests. For fruit flies and drain flies, combine some apple cider vinegar and a few drops of soap. Place this near where the flies are more prevalent, usually in the kitchen.

Produce like garlic, onions, and citrus can be used to keep spiders at bay. Part of preventing a pest or insect infestation is removing all traces of the creatures from their hiding spots. This helps to prevent future creatures from following suit and moving in unannounced. Using a vinegar cleaning solution in areas where you’ve had pests can help with this.

Below are a couple of “recipes” to help you get started on some DIY pest control solutions for the most common pests you’ll find. You may need to do some trial and error before finding which works for the pests in your home.

Also, be careful how you apply these treatments. Essential oils and some foods can be harmful to pets. If you create any of these recipes for future use, make sure they are marked clearly on any container and stored away from pets and children.

Recipes for flies: Apple cider vinegar & dish soap; basil; eucalyptus oil

Recipes for ants: Citrus juice or oil; white distilled vinegar.

Outdoors

There are a few other options for outdoor issues. You may be able to use these to deter rodents and other invasive pests from damaging your lawn or garden. Garlic and the soap spray mentioned above are both still effective, even when used outdoors to deter certain insects.

You can use coffee grounds (after pouring yourself a cup) to keep creatures away from your garden and any suspected entry points around your home.
