4 Things Rodents Love
Rodents are notorious for entering dirty environments, but no matter how clean your home may be, rodents will still find something to enjoy. Rodents will find any way to enter your home, even if you’ve done your best to seal it.
While there are some things you can do to prevent rodents from entering your home, you should be most aware of what rodents are looking for in order to keep your home safe and clean.
1. Food
Rats, mice, and other rodents are hungry. They can smell food from far and are just looking for something to eat. You obviously can’t live without food in the home, but cutting down on exposed food will help mitigate the lingering smell.
Keep jars and boxes sealed when not in use, and place food from boxes (cereal, pasta, crackers), in sealed containers. Clean up spills and crumbs as soon as possible, and make sure to get behind appliances and in hard-to-reach places periodically.
2. Plants
Plants are also food for rodents. Live plants are still organic matter and can, and will, be eaten. This doesn’t mean you need to throw out all your plants, but just be aware that this may be a hiding place for rodents.
3. Waste
Rodents are also attracted to human and animal waste. If you have a pet, keep up with cleaning litter boxes, cages, droppings, and any waste they may leave behind. Rodents will discover the smell and seek out this less-appetizing form of sustenance.
4. Warmth
Along with food, rodents want a warm place to sleep and hide out from the elements. They’ll use their teeth to enter your home through small openings and either camp out in your walls or run around your home.
