A group of termites on a piece of partially eaten wood. Early detection is key when it comes to keeping termite infestations at bay.

Termites can be hard for the untrained eye to notice. The best way to keep your home or business free from termites is to set up recurring annual inspections, but termites can still do a lot of damage in the time between inspections – and early detection is the key to effective termite control. So, what can you do as a home or business owner? Read on for a few useful tips from the Econex Pest Management team.

Early Signs of Termite Infestation

It’s likely that structural damage won’t be the first thing you notice during a termite infestation; there are a few other warning signs to be aware of, such as the following:

  • Termite droppings. These are called “frass” and are the same color as wood; they resemble sawdust.
  • Swarmer termites. These termites act as “scouts” for the colony. If you notice winged termites, living or dead, gathered on your property, the rest of the colony could be underway – or already at work building their new home.
  • Shed wings. Swarmer termites shed their wings once they mate, leaving them piled up near the site of infestation.
  • Wood shavings. Termites are messy eaters. You might notice discarded pieces of wood around your home or business, inside and outside.

If you notice any of these signs, get in touch with Econex Pest Management immediately. By acting fast, you could save yourself a lot of time, money, and hassle.

Examples of Termite Damage

Structural damage is the biggest concern with termite infestations. Termites feed on the cellulose found in wood, which leaves the wood brittle and hollow – weakening it significantly.

  • Mud tubes. These are “tunnels” that termites build to reach from the ground to the wood they want to inhabit.
  • Unexplained cracks on internal walls, ceiling beams, or rafters. There are several potential causes for these cracks, and termites are one of them.
  • Sagging or hollow-sounding areas on the floor. This is a sign that the underlying structure of your floor is weakened – another potential sign of termites.
  • Doors and windows sticking. If termites eat away at your door or window frames, they can cause warping – which means doors and windows won’t open or close properly.

Termites can do a lot of damage very quickly; the earlier you notice the signs, the more can be done to prevent it from getting out of control.
